About BratMUN

Bratislava Model United Nations (BratMUN) is a UN simulation annually taking place in Bratislava. Just as during any other MUN conference, secondary school students from all around the world are given the opportunity to serve as delegates for various countries and thus develop their skills of diplomacy and argumentation through discussion about issues of global significance.

1 Opening ceremony

During the opening ceremony, the floor is given to the Secretary-General, Director of UNIS Vienna, senior organizing advisers of BratMUN and renowned diplomats to hold a speech and welcome delegates to the BratMUN conference.

2 Comittee sessions

During the committee sessions, delegates are divided into eight UN bodies, such as the Security Council, Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee or the United Nations Environmental Programme, where they discuss beforehand announced topics. The negotiation process should result in a resolution, which binds the United Nations organ to carry out steps that have been agreed upon by a majority in the respective United Nations body.

3 General Assembly

At the beginning of the last conference day, delegates from all standard committees will gather at the 16th Bratislava Model United Nations General Assembly to discuss passed resolutions from every committee. The General Assembly will then have to vote in favour of every resolution wishing to be implemented into practice. The two expert committees will meanwhile be developing their resolutions even further, since a crisis during the committee session will force them to postpone the standard negotiation process.

4 Closing ceremony

The Closing Ceremony offers an opportunity to award the best delegates from every committee as well as best Slovak and international delegations of the conference. The conference will be closed by a speech given by the Secretary-General.

History

2000

First BratMUN ever

Founded in 2000 by a group of International Baccalaureate students at Gymázium Jura Hronca, 11 years after the Velvet revolution, there is a symbolical significance for all Slovak and Czech students for the conference to take place in November.

2000-2013

More BratMUNs organized

Sixteen years ago, BratMUN started off as a small event at the venue of the organizing school. After years, however, BratMUN has grown into one of the biggest MUN conferences in Central Europe and has welcomed ambitious students from more than 25 countries. For many years, BratMUN has taken place at the Slovak National Council under the auspices of the council's speakers.

2013

Cooperation with Paneurópska Vysoká Škola

In 2013, BratMUN has established a close cooperation with Paneurópska Vysoká Škola (Paneuropean University), which has since provided the venue for BratMUN free of charge.

2016

BratMUN still improving

In 2016, BratMUN was aiming to build on the reputation gained in the past years. The 16th session was opened in Moyzes Hall, a beautiful building at the bank of Danube. Moreover, we presented two expert committees, specially designed for elite delegates with significant MUN experience. On top of that, we have transformed the concept of the BratMUN General Assembly, making it far more dynamic and interactive than before.

This year's BratMUN

Gymnázium Jura Hronca

Gymnázium Jura Hronca (Jur Hronec Secondary School) is an elite secondary school in Bratislava, widely regarded as one of the best schools in Slovakia. Bearing the name of Jur Hronec, a renowned Slovak mathematician, the school was founded in 1959 as an 11-year secondary school focusing on natural sciences, primarily mathematics and computer science.

After a few years, however, Gymnázium Jura Hronca has also started guiding its pupils to civic initiatives through one of the most successful debate clubs in the country. Having the status of the most liberal and opinion-leading secondary school in Slovakia, Gymnázium Jura Hronca is far more than just an educational institution.

Having the status of the most liberal and opinion-leading secondary school in Slovakia, Gymnázium Jura Hronca is far more than just an educational institution.

Its complexity and variety in all academic disciplines has only been strengthened in June 1994, when the school acquired the status of an International Baccalaureate World School - being the first in Slovakia. Even nowadays, it is the only secondary school in Slovakia offering education according to international guidelines free of charge.

Some of the school's most known alumni include politicians, businessmen or the former governor of the Slovak National Bank. Students coming from Gymnázium Jura Hronca have studied at universities such as Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge and many of our alumni are continuing in this tradition every year.
